Monroe County:
Named for: James Monroe future president.
Established: January 28, 1813.
County Seat: Woodsfield
Parent Counties: Belmont,
Guernsey and
Washington.
Monroe County is located in the southeastern part of the state on the West Virginia border. State Routes 78 and 556 cross the county east and west, and State Routes 7, 26, 145, 255, 260, 536, and 800 run north and south. The Little Muskingum River flowers through Monroe County, and the Ohio River provides its eastern border.
Part of Ohio’s Appalachian region, Monroe County has been called the “Switzerland of Ohio” because of its rugged hills and early Swiss settlers.
