I am trying to locate the parents of Abraham J. Davis who was born
1830 near Jamestown, Monroe Co., OH. He moved to Owen Co., Indiana in 1851,
married and purchased land in 1858. He also received 45 acres of land from
George DAVIS (don't know if relative???) for maintenance in 1858. The only
promising parent for him in Monroe Co., OH is Abraham DAVIS. This Abraham
was on the Ohio Tax lists for 1809 & 1810 in Belmont Co., OH. In 1820
he was on the census records for Belmont County and in 1830 he was in Monroe
County. His first wife was Nancy RUBLE and his second wife was Mrs. Sarah
WINDLAND. Sarah might have been the mother of Abraham J. DAVIS.

M-66 THURLOW / THURLO / THURLOE / THORLO / THORLA
I am researching the THURLOW surname as a one-name study, alternately spelled
THORLA, THURLO, THORLO, THURLOE amongst others. I have tracked one line
of this family from Massachusetts and New Hampshire to Ohio in the early
1800s. I have some photocopied extracts from "The History of Noble County"
and a limited family tree that refers to a family of THORLAs living at
Brookfield, Olive, and Noble Townships in Noble County. A T. M. Thurlow
was the Noble County Sheriff in 1905, according to a note and stationary
I have signed at Caldwell, Ohio 30 Oct 1905. I believe when the family
first arrived in Ohio in the 1810s/20s they may have also lived in Monroe
County. The THORLAs also ran a distillery producing Rye Whiskey called
'Old Thorla' at Zanesville.
To my point, I am looking for any genealogy or family history that traces
any and/or all THURLOW/THORLAs etc from their arrival in Ohio to the present.
With the information I have already collected I may also be of some help
to anyone with an interest in this or related families in this region,
or anywhere else for that matter. I will gladly share what I have. 10/14/96

M-57 FLEAHMAN, FLEAMAN
John Adam Fleahman left Woodsfield, Ohio and joined Capt Spangler's Co
(G), 7th West Virginia Infantry. He was mustered in at Camp Carlile, on
Wheeling Island on Nov 18th, 1861. He was designated a 1st Lt. having served
previously in the Mexican War(1847-48) He suffered a head wound at the
Battle of Antietam and was medically discharged Feb 1 1863. I have what
I believe are most of his Federal service records. I would like to access
any records of his service as a member of the state militia particularly
in reference to the Monroe County militia and its response to Morgan's
Raiders.
I have the following reference ......
>From the Woodsfield, Ohio "Spirit of Democracy" newspaper .....
July 22nd, 1863 - Our readers will understand by referring to Governor
Todd's proclamation calling out the militia, the reason we do not have
a full sheet this week, as our hands are high privates in Capt. Fleaman's
(sic)Company, ordered to camp at Marietta. The proclamation gives all the
information we have on the subject. So far as we have learned, the Monroe
Co. militia will all be at Marietta in the course of the next 3 or 4 days.
(The militia was called because because the Governor wanted to capture
General John Morgan and his raiders)
My question is ......... Was Capt. Fleaman and 1st Lt. John Adam
Fleahman the same person?
Additionally, is the July 22nd, 1863 edition of the "Spirit of Democracy"
available to be copied? Please respond by email. Dated 10/7/96 Jim

M-55 STANTON, STUBBS, HANSON, BOSWELL, WAY, LESLIE, HAYES
I have done some work and have information from Belmont Co., Ohio. I am
looking for information on the following surnames: STANTON, STUBBS, HANSON,
BOSWELL, WAY, LESLIE, HAYES. In Henshaw's book (pg 442) there is a list
of a STANTON, William & Mary & their children: Schooley (my line),
Lydia, Mary Jane, and Sarah. Then (pg 594) there is a list showing a STANTON,
William married to a LESLIE, Mary, 3 Oct 1821 and their children: Rachel
Ann, Issac, Abigail, and Thomas. My question: Is STANTON, William &
Mary the same STANTON, William & LESLIE, Mary? Please respond by email.

M-52 Question on Irish Immigration Patterns in Eastern Ohio
I was hoping someone might share their knowledge on Irish immigrants/immigration
patterns in eastern Ohio in the period after the famine (1848 to early
1850s). My ancestor Arthur SHERRY arrived in Bellaire in 1854, according
to land records, and I haven't had any luck tracing backwards from there.
(I've focused on 1850 Censuses and the Glazer Irish Immigration books thus
far.) Any thoughts would be appreciated! Please respond by email. Dated

M-51 MOORE / MOOSE, MELLOTT, PITTMAN
I am researching the MOORE and or MOOSE surnames of Monroe co., but also
have records where they lived in Belmont and Noble counties in the mid
1800's. In 1850 Isac and Marcilla MOORE were living in Bealsville, Sunsbury
twp. but I find other mention of the MOOSE surname, so I am not certain
if the name maybe was misspelled or if they changed the spelling. I believe
it is MOORE< as that is my maiden name and I am hunting for my ggrfather
Daniel MOORE b. about 1850, son of Isac and Marcilla, I think, he married
a Mary LONGLEY and settled in Muskingum CO. Zanesville, OH. He was there
until 1912 and is lost from that time on. Also, the Name MELLOTT and PITTMAN
seems to be mentioned with this. They have connections to William SMITH
of Noble county and to the RUSH name of this area. Believe some to be buried
in the Bealsville cem. but I haven't been able to sort it all out. Thanks.
Please respond by email. Dated 10/1/96 Linda
