KOCHER Family
Submitted by: Paula Talbert
The following is from, Monroe County Ohio Families. KOCHER

"John Jacob Kocher and his wife, Mary Ann Andres, settled in Steinersville, Belmont County, Ohio, having emigrated to this place from Switzerland in 1820. "Their son, Alexander Kocher, was born the tenth day of July, 1829, and according to his obituary and old records of St. Johns Church in Switzerland Township, he was the first child christened at the church after its organization. "On Christmas Day, 1849, Alexander was married to Hulda Blair, daughter of James and Sara (Smith) Blair. They settled on land near Blair Run which had been purchased from the State of Ohio by James Blair. They lived in a log cabin and made their living by farming. To this union twelve children were born, Harvey Wilson Kocher being the eleventh child and only boy in the family. In 1881 Alexander had a house built on the farm and he and his wife and the children that still remained at home moved into the new house. "On May 15, 1914, Harvey Wilson Kocher was married to Flora Mae Talbot, daughter of Rodrick and Nancy Talbot. They had one son, Earle Alexander Kocher, born May 10, 1915. Harvey and his wife continued to live on the farm where he was born and farmed for a living. They attended the Church of Christ at Clarington where he served as a deacon for many years. He lived on the farm until overgrown by illness. "Earle grew up on the farm and attended Blair Run School. This was a one-room building with no electricity and a burnside stove in the center of the room for heat. Eight grades were in this room and were taught by one teacher. After grade school Earle attended high school at Clarington and graduated with the class of 1935. "Earle continued to help his father on the farm until called to serve in the army in 1941. On November 3, 1941, he married Clara Roberts, daughter of Charlie and Sydney (Kirk) Roberts, at Woodsfield. After returning from the army in 1945 Earle was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Ohio River locks and dam. Earle and Clara lived in Belpre and attended the Church of Christ there until he was transferred to Lock 16 at Beavertown in 1968 where Clara passed away February 11, 1973. In 1974 he married Dorothy Roberts Howell. They made their home in Woodsfield until her death in 1983. "Earle and Clara have two children, Earle, Jr., and Doris, botrh living with their families in Belpre. Earle Kocher, Jr., (Bud) works at Elkem Medals and is married to Theresa Bartlett. Theresa is a registered nurse and works at Western Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Parkersburg. Theresa and Bud have four children, John, Renae, Earle Alexander III, and Kimberly. Doris is employed as a secretary for Belpre City Schools and has one daughter, Shele Leigh Cain. Doris is married to Rodger Ridgway who works as a pipe fitter and welder. "Earle Kocher, Sr., retired from the Corps of Engineers in January 1983 and resides in Belpre. "Submitted by Earle A. Kocher, Sr."
